12/20/09 - New York Times Discusses Grail Engine Technologies
NO new car marketed in the United States has been powered by a two-stroke engine since Saab phased out its hard-to-housebreak 3-cylinder in the late 1960s, when federal air pollution laws were taking hold. And with images from Eastern Europe of belching Trabants still fresh, there hasn’t been much of a clamor for a two-stroke revival, either.
Simple and inexpensive, yet powerful for their size, two-stroke engines held great appeal in the years before fuel economy and exhaust emissions became primary concerns. But now, with the technology of conventional four-stroke engines quite mature, there is renewed interest in taming the two-stroke to compete with diesels, hybrids and electrics as part of the solution to meeting future mileage standards.

12/20/09 - Grail Engine Technologies makes another appearance in the Salina Journal.
A local company developing a cutting-edge engine is in talks with Honda to license its technology. Matthew Riley, CEO and chief research scientist with Grail Engine Technologies, said his company has been in talks with Honda for several months, including a face-to-face meeting in late October in Salina with top-level Honda engineers from the U.S. and Japan. “We’re in technical negotiations,” Riley said. “They’re getting a full understanding of the technology. Honda’s track record is they don’t mess with something if it doesn’t have serious merit.”

12/01/09 - Desktop Engineering has published the article that features our work
The irony of so many of humankind’s solutions to problems is that they introduce new, unforeseen problems of their own. Consider those who propose reducing or eliminating the negative effects of the internal combustion engine by expanding the use of batteries. Sounds good at first blush, but what happens to the batteries at the end of their operational life? Do they end up in a landfill? Would we be replacing one problem with another?
Grail Engine Technologies decided it would be better to improve the internal combustion engine than to replace it, and began its design process in April 2009. The result is a state-of-the-art two-stroke engine that achieves more than 100 mpg—improving fuel efficiency 50 percent over current vehicles—while extensively reducing exhaust emissions. The power plant operates on multiple types of fuels, including bio diesel, ethanol, gasoline, alcohol-based fuels, propane, methane, hydrogen, and natural gas, and reduces the production cost of automobiles.

10/25/09 - "Engineers from major automaker visit city" - Salina Journal
Engineers from major automaker visit city Two senior engineers from a major Japanese auto company came to Salina to meet Friday with the founders of Grail Engine Technologies. Grail, headquartered in Chapman, is developing a unique, two-cycle internal combustion engine that its designers say will combine power, fuel efficiency and low emissions in an engine that is much cheaper to manufacture. A prototype is being developed at Exline. Grail CEO Matthew Riley and president Nicholas Bennington met at Exline with the Japanese engineers for three hours, showing them the prototype and outlining the technology behind the engine. “We are extremely honored to be visited by two senior engineers from Japan, who traveled a great distance to visit with us concerning technological advancements developed by Grail Engine Technologies,” Riley said after the meeting. Bennington said work on a prototype is moving quickly, and he expects to begin in car, on-road testing of the engine in early 2010.
